In what was the first Soviet-Israeli soccer game played in Israel in 33 years, the Soviet Union’s Dynamo Kiev soccer team trounced Israel 4-0 in Ramat Gan Stadium Tuesday.

The last previous game, on the same site in 1956, also ended with a Kiev victory.

The Kiev team, which was given a warm welcome when they arrived at Ben-Gurion Airport Monday night, is the pride of the Soviet Union. It won a gold medal in the 1988 Olympics last summer in Seoul, South Korea. It also was runner-up in last summer’s European Cup tournament.

Israelis can take some comfort in the fact that the Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team defeated the championship CSKA Red Army team in a match played in Moscow Jan. 12.
