The wife of indicted electronics merchant “Crazy Eddie” told reporters that his suicide attempt last week was not his first.
Debbie Antar is trying to have her imprisoned husband released on bail, on grounds that his detention endangers both his physical and his mental health.
Eddie Antar reportedly swallowed a bottle of sedatives last week while in the hospital ward at Ayalon Prison in Ramla. He has been incarcerated while awaiting court hearings on an extradition request to stand trial in the United States for fraud.
Debbie Antar and her husband’s lawyer, Assaf Caspi, told reporters Tuesday that the inmate tried to slash his wrist about three weeks ago. They said they were only informed of this recently. They spoke in response to reports that Antar had not tried to kill himself last Friday but had simply fallen unconscious.
The Jerusalem District Court has ordered a psychiatrist to examine Antar and determine whether he is fit to remain in jail after his latest suicide attempt.
