Israeli authorities this week deported a member of the Palestinian police force to Jordan because he was allegedly involved in attacks on Israelis.

It was the first such deportation since Palestinian self-rule began in the Gaza Strip and West Bank Jericho enclave last May.

Israeli authorities arrested Mohammed Jamil Issawi last month at the Erez checkpoint separating Israel from Gaza.

He was suspected of involvement in the planning and execution of attacks against Israelis. He was also arrested for crossing into Israel using a false identity, according to Israel Television.

Issawi was escorted by Israeli security officials on Monday across the Allenby Bridge into Jordan.

Israeli officials and rejected a request by the Palestinian Authority that he be deported to Gaza or Jericho instead of Jordan.

Palestinian officials charged that deportations of Palestinian police violated the terms of the self-rule accord.
