Internal Security Minister Moshe Shahal has barred the Palestinian Authority from hosting an economic workshop in an eastern Jerusalem hotel.

The workshop, organized by Ahmed Karia, the Palestinian Authority official in charge of economic affairs, was to take place at the Notre Dame Hotel.

Shahal issued an order Monday prohibiting the workshop from taking place at the hotel, saying that it violated legislation limiting Palestinian Authority activities in Jerusalem. Karia has filed a complaint with israel over the matter.

The Knesset passed legislation in 1994 that bars the Palestinian Authority from holding official activities inside Israel, including Jerusalem.

Both Israel and the palestinians have been sensitive to any signs that can be interpreted as charges in the status quo regarding Jerusalem. The future of the city is to be determined in final-status negotiations, which are slated to begin in May.
