An Israeli official was reported as saying that final agreement on an American proposal to jump-start the stalled peace process could be reached within the next 10 days. The comment came as U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright held separate meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority leader Yasser Arafat to discuss the proposal, under which Israel would turn over an additional 13 percent of the West Bank in return for a Palestinian crackdown on terrorism.
