Pope John Paul II reportedly praised Mel Gibson’s controversial new film as an accurate portrayal of the build-up to Jesus’ crucifixion. According to a report in the National Catholic Reporter, a Vatican official said the pope responded to a screening of “The Passion” by saying, “It is as it was.”
