Five Canadian rabbis released an open letter to Ariel Sharon protesting his actions related to the Gaza withdrawal. Noting that the Toronto community is usually one of the most supportive of Israel in the Diaspora, the rabbis wrote that they felt compelled to protest what they called the government’s lack of respect for free speech and human rights regarding Gaza settlers, as well as its alleged failure to arrange fair compensation for them.
