Managers of fund for laborers go on trial

Four top officials of a fund to compensate Nazi-era slave laborers went on trial in Poland. They are charged with illegally paying themselves bonuses totaling nearly $150,000. The trial started Thursday. Jacek Turczynski, the former head of the Polish-German Reconciliation Foundation, his deputy and two others could each face up to eight years in prison, The Associated Press reported. Supported by the German and Austrian governments, the fund has paid 500,000 Polish claimants who worked as forced laborers during World War II.
