The Orthodox Union announced two programs to raise money for Sderot residents affected by rocket fire at the city. This Shabbat, designated by the organization as Shabbat Sderot, aims to have congregations affiliated with the union raise at least $250,000 for the city. The union has also launched a general fundraising campaign, the Sderot Emergency Campaign, proceeds from which will mostly be directed towards initatives for children. Funds raised during Shabbat Sderot will go toward several projects, including counseling for young people with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, a two-week summer excursion for Sderot children elsewhere in Israel, and Shabbat programs and education for those of college age.”We fully intend to raise the entire $250,000 over one Shabbat,”O.U. President Stephen Savitsky said in a statement announcing the program. “We are confident that our rabbis and their congregations will give from the heart to help relieve the suffering of the people of Sderot.”Contributions can be made on the union’s Web site.
