Bush urged to discuss restitution with Poles

Congressman Robert Wexler (D-Fla.) urged President Bush to speak with Polish President Lech Kaczynski about unresolved restitution of property confiscated during the Holocaust. In a letter signed by Wexler and 15 colleagues, the senator says it is “critical” for Poland to pass legislation to fairly address outstanding property claims. Proposed legislation in the Polish parliament about restitution and compensation has given rise to concerns that the measure is too complicated for the elderly who may wish to make claims and may restrict Americans from making property restitution claims. Wexler hopes that Bush will emphasize the importance of a “non-bureaucratic” system for making claims when he visits with Kaczynski June 8.
