Israel released more than 250 Palestinian prisoners.
A festive crowd of thousands led by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas greeted the prisoners at Ramallah in the West bank.
Most of the prisoners were affiliated with Abbas’ relatively moderate Fatah Party. Israel is seeking to bolster Abbas now that he has severed ties with Hamas.
Forces loyal to Abbas were routed last month from the Gaza Strip by Hamas, a terrorist group.
