Israel’s new ambassador to Australia was accredited by the governor-general.
Yuval Rotem, a career diplomat, was sworn in Thursday at the Government House in Canberra. He presented his credentials to Governor-General Michael Jeffery.

Canberra is Israel’s only mission in the South Pacific following closures in the past decade in Wellington and Suva, as well as the Israeli consulate in Sydney.

Rotem has served as Israel’s consul general in New York and Los Angeles. He will soon present his credentials in New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Fiji.

He succeeds Nati Tamir, whose tenure was cut short following a storm of protest over racist remarks he reportedly made in an interview last year with an Israeli newspaper.
