A cluster bomb left over from last summer’s war in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah killed a mine clearing expert.
The bomb exploded Thursday in the southern Lebanese town of Nabatiyeh, killing Abbas Jaber, a Lebanese national employed by the Mine Advisory Group, a British organization. Three others were wounded, the Associated Press reported.
Human rights groups say Israel dropped about 4 million cluster bombs in the region during the war last summer. In most cases, Israel dropped the bombs after warnings that cleared the areas of civilians, but an estimated 1 million did not explode on impact.
Jaber was the 31st person to be killed by cluster bombs after the war ended. The deaths have led to legislation in U.S. Congress banning the sales of such bombs to countries that do use them in areas that could potentially result in civilian deaths.
