Austria must toughen sanctions against Iran, the World Jewish Congress head told Austria’s chancellor.

Iran’s nuclear ambitions were the main topic of discussion Tuesday when WJC President Ronald Lauder met in Vienna with Austrian Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer.

Lauder also met with Austrian President Heinz Fischer, and will be meeting with Austrian Jewish leaders this week, as part of events marking the 20th anniversary of the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation and its Jewish educational and social programs in Central and Eastern Europe.

A WJC statement said that Lauder urged Gusenbauer to support harsher sanctions against Iran if Tehran refuses to accept the demands of the U.N. Security Council,

“Austria plays an important role in Central Europe as a role model and a bridge, particularly when it comes to the newly democratic states,” Lauder said, adding that Iran’s apparent goals are “not only a threat to Israel, but for all Europe.”
