Fayyad: No peace deal this year

A peace deal before year’s end is unlikely, the Palestinian Authority prime minister said.

“I don’t think that is likely,” Salam Fayyad said to Reuters on Thursday during a private U.S. visit, referring to President Bush’s prediction last month of a peace deal before he leaves office.

Fayyad blamed Israel for not making good on pledges to dismantle unauthorized settlements and otherwise freeze settlements, and for undermining P.A. troops through raids.

Israel says its forces remain active in the West Bank because Fayyad’s government is not yet strong enough to prevent terrorism.
