Ehud Olmert and Mahmoud Abbas reached some understandings on future borders and security during talks.

The Israeli prime minister and the Palestinian Authority president held talks in the wake of U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s visit to the region.

Olmert hosted Abbas at his Jerusalem residence Monday, shortly after Rice completed her 48-hour troubleshooting visit.

Olmert and Abbas are trying to make progress in U.S.-sponsored peace talks before President Bush visits
next week for Israel’s 60th Independence Day.

According to Israel Radio, the sides have reached some understandings on future borders and security arrangements but have yet to broach the more combustible issues of the status of Jerusalem and fate of Palestinian refugees.
