An Australian Jewish couple says it was “nothing short of a miracle” that they survived a near-disaster in mid-air.
Newlyweds Michelle and Morris Mellinger, from Melbourne, were returning from their honeymoon in Europe last Friday on a Qantas flight from Hong Kong when a suspected exploding oxygen tank blew a hole in the 747’s fuselage, prompting the aircraft to lose cabin pressure and oxygen masks to appear as the flight almost nosedived into the South China Sea.
“A greater power decided our number wasn’t up yet,” Michelle Mellinger told the Australian Jewish News. “I’m not a religious person, but for us to get out of this was nothing short of a miracle. She said she was going to synagogue “definitely, to say thanks.”
The Mellingers were among 346 passengers who all survived the mid-air scare. The plane managed to make an emergency landing in Manila. All passengers and crew disembarked safely.
