Israeli President Shimon Peres pressed his Chinese counterpart on Iran at the launch of the Beijing Olympics.

Peres was one of only eight world leaders who had a face to face meeting with Hu Jintao on Friday, the opening day of the 2008 Olympics.

Peres asked Hu to take a more active role in isolating Iran, reassuring the Chinese leader that Israel had no intention of harming the Islamic Republic.

Peres told Ha’aretz on the flight to Beijing that while China is not happy with sanctions aimed at isolating Iran, they are not blocking them.

Israel and the United States are rallying international support for sanctions aimed at getting Iran to stop its suspected nuclear program.
