Police block settlement bid

Israeli police blocked an attempt to build a settlement in an Arab neighborhood of Jerusalem.

Right-wing activists entered Shuafat, north of the capital, on Tuesday intent on setting up a new settlement – dubbed Shaar Hamizrach – on land they said was originally Jewish-owned.

Police intercepted the group before any confrontations with local Palestinians, detaining 10 of the activists for questioning.

Shuafat is among the outlying Jerusalem neighborhoods that Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Haim Ramon has proposed ceding to the Palestinians under a future peace accord.
