Russian: U.S. should follow Israel on Georgia

The United States should emulate Israel and stop arms sales to Georgia, according to Russia’s U.N. envoy.

“Israel, which has also been one of the arms suppliers, is reconsidering its sales in the arms area,” Vitaly Churkin told CNN on Tuesday.

Churkin, who charged the United States with propping up the Georgian regime, was outlining areas where U.S.-Russian relations might improve in the wake of the current conflict.

Russia invaded Georgia last week after Georgian authorities raided South Ossetia, a breakaway pro-Russian province.

Israel reportedly has suspended light arms sales to Georgia in recent days, in part because it is soliciting Russian support in isolating Iran until the Islamic Republic suspends its suspected nuclear program.
