The Palestinian mastermind behind the murder of an Israeli lawmaker was sentenced to life in prison.

Majdi Rahima Rimawi was sentenced Monday in Jerusalem District Court for being the handler of the gunmen who assassinated Rehavam Ze’evi, the Israeli tourism minister, at the Hyatt Hotel in Jerusalem in October 2001. Ze’evi was shot outside of his hotel room.

Rimawi, an operative for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, was found guilty in July of recruiting the gunmen and providing them a photo of Ze’evi, fake Israeli identification cards and information on the hotel layout.

Rimawi also was found guilty of being responsible for several attacks in Israel, including car bombings and shootings. He was arrested by the Palestinian Authority in 2002.
