Israel understands the need to create a Palestinian state, but only if it refrains from supporting terrorism, Tzipi Livni told international leaders.

The Israeli foreign minister made the comments after meeting Sunday with the Mideast Quartet in Egypt. Livni, who is the chief peace negotiator for Israel, and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas told the Quartet that their governments continue to support the peace process jump-started last year at the Annapolis peace conference.

"We recognize the need to establish a Palestinian state, provided that it will not be a terror state," Livni told the representatives of the United States, Russia, the European Union and the United Nations.

In a statement released after the meeting, Livni and Abbas asked for continued international support for the peace process, The Associated Press reported.
