(JTA) — Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister told the Arab League that divisions among the Palestinians were to blame for the "terrible massacre" in Gaza.

"This terrible massacre would not have happened if the Palestinian people were united behind one leadership speaking in one voice," Prince Saud al-Faisal said at Wednesday’s emergency meeting of the Arab League in Cairo. "We are telling our Palestinian brothers that your Arab nation cannot extend a real helping hand if you don’t extend your own hands to each other with love."

Arab League Secretary General Amr Mussa called on the Palestinian factions to hold an immediate reconciliation meeting, according to reports. An Egyptian proposal for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas was the main item on the agenda. The meeting was also scheduled to discuss a Qatari proposal to hold an emergency Arab summit in Doha on how to deal with the Gaza crisis.
