JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israel’s Chief Rabbinate will use bar codes to prevent the sale of chametz on Passover.

Stores will use a special bar code device, programmed with the bar codes of chametz products, to prevent automated cash registers from allowing the sale to go through, the Chief Rabbinate announced Wednesday, according to reports.

The devices will be placed in stores of major supermarket chains throughout the country at the expense of the Chief Rabbinate.

Stores that do not agree to the devices could temporarily lose their kashrut certification.
