JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israel’s foreign minister left on an official visit to Russia and Belarus.
Avigdor Lieberman’s first official visit to Russia began on Monday, when he was scheduled to meet with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, along with other senior officials and heads of the Jewish community.
Lieberman is expected to press Russia to use its economic leverage and ties to Iran to urge it to stop its pursuit of nuclear weapons. The leaders are also scheduled to discuss Middle East peace efforts.
Lieberman and Lavrov will also work to strengthen the countries’ bilateral relationship.
