JERUSALEM (JTA) — Hamas freed 50 Fatah prisoners as a goodwill gesture.

The prisoner release came Wednesday in advance of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

At least 300 members of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah Party are being held in Gaza prisons by the ruling Hamas, which claims that 900 of its members are being held in P.A. jails in the West Bank.

Egyptian-sponsored Palestinian reconciliation talks are set to begin next week.

Ramadan begins at the end of the week.
