JERUSALEM (JTA) — Egyptian police shot dead two Eritrean migrants attempting to cross illegally into Israel.

Wednesday morning’s incident occurred after six Eritreans ignored Egyptian border police orders to stop and continued to try to cross the border, demarcated by a barbed wire fence, into Israel. At least three of the other Eritreans were injured.

The deaths come a week after Egyptian police fatally shot four African migrants trying to infiltrate into Israel at its border with Egypt’s Sinai Desert. Earlier in the week, 14 African and Eritrean migrants were arrested while trying to cross the border.

The migrants usually are looking for work or asylum in Israel, which has been pressuring Egypt to prevent the migrants from slipping into the country, Reuters reported.
