Gaza panel: Evacuees not rehabilitated

JERUSALEM (JTA) — More than four years after the evacuation of the Jewish residents of Gaza, their rehabilitation is not finished, a panel reported.

The official committee evaluating the treatment of Gaza evacuees by Israel since the disengagement delivered an interim report Tuesday to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"The removal of the evacuees from their homes, the expropriation of the real estate assets that they held, the cutting off of their sources of income and disconnection from their varied areas of life — all this took less than two weeks. But the rehabilitation of these families has still not finished today, more than four years after the evacuation," the report said. "Worse than this, it appears that the end is not in sight."

The report called on Netanyahu to help end the plight of the Gaza evacuees.

Copies of the report were given to Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin, Supreme Court President Dorit Beinisch and Yoel Hasson, the chairman of the Knesset’s State Control Committee, Ha’aretz reported.

The report was released just hours after the Industry, Trade and Labor Ministry released a report saying that unemployment of Gaza evacuees had dropped to 16.2 percent from 18.8 percent the previous year.
