(JTA) — Irene Klass, publisher of The Jewish Press weekly newspaper, has died.

Klass died Nov. 22 in New York. She was 94.

The independent newspaper, which published its first issue in January 1960, is geared toward the Orthodox Jewish community.

Klass wrote commentary, poetry and general articles regularly in the paper. She recruited many of the newspaper’s most popular columnists, including Esther Jungreis, Dr. Morris Mandel and Rabbi Meir Kahane, according to an obituary in the newspaper.

Klass was the wife of the late Sholom Klass, the newspaper’s founder and longtime publisher, who died in 2000, and daughter of the late Raphael Scheiber, co-founder of the newspaper.
