JERUSALEM (JTA) — Former NATO head Javier Solana apologized for mistakenly tweeting that Ariel Sharon had died.

Sharon has been in a coma since 2006. The former Israeli prime minister is still alive, though in a persistent vegetative state.

Solana, former secretary-general of NATO and former European Union high representative for common foreign and security policy, tweeted Sunday that Sharon had died. He said his information came from a friend in Israel, a high-ranking government official, according to Haaretz. He later apologized for the error, according to the newspaper.

In a previous Twitter error, Solana had announced the death of two Spanish soldiers in Afghanistan before the official announcement was made, according to Haaretz. He reportedly opened his Twitter account in February.
