Yesterday’s news du jour that Chasidic reggae star Matisyahu had bared his face after 10 years and was renouncing his Chasidism rocked the Jewish Internets for what was possibly a record thirty minutes. Unfortunately, this came to late for him to be chosen as the third Jew in a row to be Time’s Person of the Year.
At least one lingering question has been answered: No, he isn’t giving up Judaism. He went to synagogue yesterday and leaving shul today came up with an epigram that I really don’t think is going to catch on. What will the future hold for the artist formerly known as Matthew Miller? Will he go on tour with Jewish rapper Mac Miller, with whom he now shares a strange likeness (Suggested tour title: “Mac and Matt—It’s Miller Time”)?
Time will tell. Hopefully, we’ll know one day.
