The Jewish Journal’s “Top 10 Jews in the news (Like them, or not)” list included two whose deaths put them on the list: Amy Winehouse and Debbie Friedman. But how could they have missed Elizabeth Taylor, perhaps the greatest Jewish film star and celebrity of all time, who died in March?

Poor Amy Winehouse’s death also made a list of the top 10 stories of the year that “broke” on Twitter, and the top 10 items on Facebook and Billboard’s list of top musicians who died in 2011, which also included Phoebe Snow and Jerry Leiber, but not Debbie Friedman.

An ABC TV affiliate in Detroit provided a lengthy list of celebrity deaths in 2011, including a number of MOT’s whose stories were told by The Eulogizer or JTA: Sherwood Schwartz, Sidney Lumet, Elizabeth Taylor, Peter Falk, Evelyn Lauder, and Joe Simon.

The Eulogizer highlights the life accomplishments of famous and not-so-famous Jews who have passed away recently. Write to the Eulogizer at eulogizer@jta.org.
