Israeli extradited from U.S. sentenced for tax evasion

JERUSALEM (JTA) — A contractor who became the first Israeli to be extradited from the United States to Israel for tax evasion was sentenced to prison.

Aharon Barashi, who was extradited by the United States last week, was sentenced Tuesday by the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court to 30 months in prison. He will also pay a nearly $16,000 fine.

Barashi left Israel for the United States in 2003, after being indicted for owing about $4.6 million in taxes on a contracting business. He settled in Miami.

He was arrested in Miami last month on the basis of the extradition request, according to the Israeli business daily Globes. .

Barashi consented voluntarily to the extradition.
