BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (JTA) — The Emmy Award-winning show “Homeland” will feature a story line on the 1994 Buenos Aires Jewish center bombing on the premiere of its third season.
In the episode, which is scheduled to air on Sept. 29, CIA agents agree at a meeting on a list of six terrorists who must be captured.
One of the terrorists is pictured along with a map of Argentina and photos of the AMIA center after it exploded on July 18, 1994.
“His name is Maijd Javadi,” the agent says, noting that Javadi is a commander with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard’s intelligence division. “He hasn’t been seen in public since 1994, when the Mossad identified him as one of the men behind the bombing of the Jewish community center in Buenos Aires, which killed 85 people.”
In reality, Maijd Javadi is not a bombing suspect but is an Iranian musician.
News about the attack being mentioned on “Homeland,” which is modeled after a popular Israeli television series, is spreading through Argentinian social media just one week ahead of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Political analysts are speculating about whether President Cristina Fernandez will mention the AMIA bombing and the agreement that Argentina signed with Iran to jointly investigate the attack over opposition from families of the victims, the United States and Israel.
The agreement has been ratified by the ruling majority in Argentina’s national parliament but not by the Iranian parliament.
