(JTA) — Dozens of gravestones were pushed over at a Jewish cemetery in South Africa.

Many of the 30 to 40 desecrated gravestones were broken in the Oct. 27 attack in Krugersdorp, according to Ryan Machet, a resident of the mining city in northwest South Africa. Machet is trying to raise funds to build a protective wall around the cemetery. An iron fence that had surrounded the cemetery reportedly was stolen.

Some 80 Jews now live in Krugersdorp, The Jerusalem Post reported Thursday, citing Machet. More than 1,000 Jews once lived in the community.

Representatives of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies were scheduled to inspect the damage.
