JERUSALEM (JTA) — An Islamic terror group based in the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip claimed responsibility for rockets fired on Eilat.
Two long-range Grad missiles were fired at the southern Israeli resort town on Monday night, according to reports.
The extremist Salafist group, Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, claimed responsibility for the attack in a message originating from Gaza posted on social networks late on Monday night, Ynet reported.
“Our war with the enemy in Egypt will not distract us from the war with the nation’s first enemy, Israel. With Allah’s help, from us the Jews will see only injury,” the statement said, according to Ynet.
Israeli law enforcement forces on Tuesday morning continued to search for the rockets’ landing site.
Eilat has been targeted by rockets fired from the Sinai in recent years. In August, the Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted a long-range missile fired at Eilat; others have landed in open areas.
Early Tuesday morning, three rockets were fired from Gaza on southern Israel and landed in an open area. Hours later, Palestinian terrorists detonated a bomb planted on the Gaza side of the border fence with Israel in an attempt to kill Israeli soldiers patrolling the area. No one was hurt.
