NEW YORK (JTA) — The Yeshiva University men’s tennis team won its conference championship to earn the squad’s first berth in the NCAA Division III tournament.
The Maccabees (11-1) will find out their playoff opponent on Monday and play their first match in the tournament on May 8 or 9, the university said in a news release.
Yeshiva earned its way into the NCAAs this week with a 5-1 victory over Mount Saint Mary College in the championship match of the Skyline Conference postseason tournament.
“I told them after the match to take a moment to realize that they are not only tennis players, but they are now champions,” Yeshiva coach Ira Miller said in the news release. “It was made that much sweeter to be part of such an historic moment and be the first NCAA representatives in the history of their university.”
Igal Mostkov, the conference’s player of the year, improved to 11-0 this season at No. 1 singles with a straight-set victory against Mount Saint Mary.
Dmitri Lebedyev joined Mostkov as a first-team all-conference member, while Steven Jemal was tapped for the second team. Miller, in his first year guiding the Maccabees, was named the Skyline’s Coach of the Year.
