(JTA) — An Israeli solider hit with shrapnel while on leave died, bringing to 71 the total number of people killed on Israel’s side during the most recent Gaza war.

Sgt. Netanel Maman, 22, suffered a shrapnel wound to his head when a rocket fired from Gaza Aug. 22 landed near a car he was in, in his hometown of Gan Yavne in Israel’s south.

He died Friday, the army spokesman said.

Five others wounded in the explosion, including Maman’s brother, Tamir, were treated and released, according to Israeli media.

More than 2,000 Palestinians were killed in the Gaza war launched July 8 and ended this week with a long-term cease-fire agreement.
