Shia Labeouf has found religion. Again.
The Jewish-born Transformers star “found God” on the set of his new film, Fury. In a tell-all interview with Interview Magazine, Labeouf announced that he has rejected Judaism and converted to Christianity with the help of his new friend and co-star Brad Pitt and director of Fury, David Ayer.
The star, who had a Bar Mitzvah celebration at the age of 13, has proudly identified with his Jewish roots until now. In contributing to a book called "I am Jewish" in 2004, he wrote it was "beneficial to be Jewish" and that he had a "personal relationship with God that happens to work within the confines of Judaism." His father is Christian.
But other celebs have gone the other way.
1. Isla Fisher: The star of Wedding Crashers endured a 3-year Orthodox conversion in order to marry actor and comedian Sacha Baron Cohen. Fisher and Baron Cohen were married in an Orthodox ceremony in 2010. Fisher told the London Evening Standard prior to her conversion process in 2004, "I would do anything – move into any religion – to be united in marriage with him.”
2. Ivanka Trump: In addition to making a name for herself in the business world, Trump added another distinguishing factor by converting to Judaism. Four months prior to her wedding to Jared Kushner, Trump completed her conversion to Orthodox Judaism in 2009. Now, Ivanka and Jared attend weekly services at Kehilath Jeshurun on the Upper East Side and have been spotted showing their support at the Israeli Day Parade.
3. Elizabeth Taylor: Contrary to popular belief, Taylor did not convert for any man. In 1959 the star completed a Reform conversion, following the death of her third husband Michael Todd. She later married a Jewish man, Eddie Fisher, and was a staunch advocate for Israel and Jewish causes for the rest of her life.
4. Sammy Davis, Jr.: A former member of the “Rat Pack,” David Jr. converted to Judaism after suffering a near-fatal car crash. The star's interest was peaked after speaking to his friend, Eddie Cantor, about Judaism. He converted in 1961.
5. Madonna: Ok, so studying Kabbalah isn’t exactly the same thing as converting to Judaism, but this former-Catholic is now one of the most high-profile members of the movement. She even had a Passover seder and adopted a Hebrew name, Esther.
6. Marilyn Monroe: The 50’s bombshell converted to Judaism upon marrying playwrite Arthur Miller in 1956. They had another Jewish marriage ceremony upon her completion of the conversion process. However, it is uncertain whether she continued practicing after her divorce to Miller.
