Relations between Jews and Muslims in France, according to recent headlines, are tense, with Jews fearing for their lives.

In Bayonne, a city of 44,000 in the southwest corner of France, members of both minority religious communities — and of the city’s majority Catholic community — took a step towards improving relations last week.

Leaders of the three religions sponsored an ecumenical “Day of Peace” that featured a prayer service at the Bayonne synagogue and visits to each other’s houses of worship.
