JERUSALEM (JTA) — The Israeli military bombed a mortar launch pad in the Golan Heights belonging to the Syrian army after mortar shells fired from Syria hit northern Israel.
The mortar shells that exploded Monday evening in Israeli territory were believed to be errant rebel fire from Syria’s civil war. No warning sirens were triggered and no injuries were reported.
“The IDF holds the Syrian regime as responsible for any action originating from within its borders, and will not tolerate any attempt to undermine Israel’s sovereignty or the security of it citizens,” the IDF said in a statement.
Several stray rockets and shells have landed in Israel since the start of the civil war in Syria more than five years ago.
The mortar strike comes a day after a rocket fired from Gaza struck a residential neighborhood of Sderot in southern Israel. The Israeli army retaliated with dozens of air and artillery strikes on Gaza.
