More than 200 students showed up at Yeshiva University’s Wilf Campus in NYC for JScreen‘s Jewish genetic screening event. JScreen is a national non-profit public health initiative dedicated to preventing Jewish genetic diseases. It hosted a genetic screening event for students to learn what’s in their genes, and help them take control of their future. JScreen collected saliva samples onsite and students will receive their results a few weeks later by phone or video teleconference via a certified genetic counselor.
One of the key points of education for JScreen is that there are more diseases to be aware of, and to test for, than Tay-Sachs, which many people know to be not as prevalent as before.
JScreen gives individuals and couples important information to help them plan ahead for the health of their future children. Testing is performed by a certified laboratory and results are reviewed and reported to participants by genetic counselors. The screening panel includes Tay-Sachs, Cystic Fibrosis, and over 200 other genetic diseases.
