The Chief Rabbinate here announced today the appointment of 18 members to the General Assembly of the Istanbul Jewish Community. The 18 seats had been vacant for 15 years.
The appointments were made following approval of the candidates by the Turkish authorities. The General Assembly is an 80-member body composed of representatives of both lay and religious groups.
The Turkish Government has authorized the Chief Rabbinate to send 50 Scrolls of the Law to Israel, it was announced today. The Torahs will be placed aboard a vessel leaving for Haifa this week. The Scrolls were taken from synagogues which closed recently, particularly in suburban areas of Istanbul.
