Quiet prevailed in the town of Bnei Brak today following yesterday’s clashes, which resulted in the wounding of 10 policemen and 10 civilians. The clashes broke out when several hundred Orthodox Jews sought to block attempts by police to remove for an autopsy the body of a man who collapsed and died on a street in the town. Religious groups are opposed to the carrying out of autopsies.
This morning, Religious Affairs Minister Zorach Warhaftig and other prominent Orthodox leaders asked Police Minister Bechor Shitreet to instruct the Institute of Forensic Medicine not to perform the autopsy. The deceased was brought to the Institute last night, following the clash between the police and the religious demonstrators.
