58,837 Refugees Leave Germany for European Countries

A total of 58,837 refugees have left Germany for European countries since Hitler’s accession, according to figures made public by the Joint Distribution Committee. Almost half of these, 25,000, have gone to France, of whom 9,000 remain and 3,000 are reported in urgent need.

Refugees emigrated to other European countries as follows: Holland, 5,837, registered by committee for refugees, of whom 3,500 remain; Czechoslovakia, 8,000, of whom 2,600 remain; Poland, 9,000 registered by the refugee committee; Belgium, 3,000; Scandinavian countries, 2,000; Spain 2,000; Austria, 1,000; Italy, 1,000; Switzerland, 2,000.

The J.D.C. quoted a report from HICEM, emigration agency, that 13,428 refugees were aided in emigrating from countries of refuge to permanent homes between May, 1933, and Jan., 1936. Of these, 3,371 were sent to Palestine, 2,022 to the Americas and South Africa.
