A caricature of a Jewish candidate for the Italian parliament has drawn fire as anti-Semitic.
The cartoon in the left-wing daily Il Manifesto portrays Fiamma Nirenstein as a monster-like “Fiamma Frankenstein,” wearing a campaign button, a Star of David and a fascist insignia.
Nirenstein, a journalist, is a candidate of the center-right People of Freedom party in next month’s elections.
The Anti-Defamation League called the cartoon “indisputably anti-Semitic” and called on Il Manifesto’s editors to apologize.
Co-editor Gabriele Polo rejected the criticism, saying the cartoon was legitimate satire. Another party candidate recently sparked controversy by declaring himself a lifelong fascist.
