A former head of intelligence for the Israel Defense Force apologized for remarks he made comparing the knitted skullcaps worn by some Israeli soldiers to the swastikas worn by Nazi soldiers. In the uproar that ensued, Reserve Maj. Gen. Shlomo Gazit said he was talking about “a phenomenon I consider worrying,” but added that his remarks were “stupid,” the Israeli daily Ha’aretz reported.
