A group of U.S. lawmakers plans to introduce a bill expressing opposition to a unilateral declaration of a Palestinian state. “The United States government must send a clear message to the PLO that a unilateral declaration of a Palestinian state is unacceptable, violates the Oslo Accords and poses a risk of a breakdown of peace within the region,” said Jim Saxton (R-N.J.), one of the bill’s sponsors. Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat has said he has the right to declare statehood when the interim period envisioned in the Oslo accords ends on May 4.
