A leading French presidential candidate reportedly received the backing of Simone Veil. The AFP reported that Nicolas Sarkozy announced the former French health minister’s participation in his campaign Thursday.
Veil, 80, a Holocaust survivor, served as minister in 1975. She was the first woman to preside over the European Parliament between 1979 and 1982, and currently presides over the French Holocaust Memorial Foundation. Noted French anti-terror expert and judge Jean-Louis Brugiere, 63, is also expected to back Sarkozy.
