A Scottish herring company is flying in American rabbis to supervise its kashrut.
The Orkney Herring Co. landed a deal to make 54,000 jars of the fish popular in Jewish tradition for vendors in the United States every month, the Daily Record reported Monday, but needed to tighten up its kosher standards to appeal to more strictly observant U.S. Jews.
Along with the Americans, a rabbi from Germany and one from Glasgow also have been to the factory in recent weeks.
The 21-year-old company makes its product from a family recipe that is hidden in a safe at a secret location, the paper reported.
